Earnings Test a Damaged Tape

October 19–23: technology weakness and deteriorating Nasdaq participation put the burden on earnings, price repair and broader buying.

// THIS WEEK

October 19–23 opens with price damage and weaker Nasdaq participation. December ES lost 2.07% and NQ 5.56% last week, both breaking prior-week lows. September CPI rose 0.6% month over month and producer prices 1.3%, keeping inflation in focus. Netflix, Tesla, IBM and GM earnings now test whether company results can steady sentiment. Tuesday’s housing data, Thursday’s claims and Friday’s consumer sentiment are the economic checkpoints. Seasonal context is constructive, but a durable recovery needs price repair and broader participation. The next Fed decision is October 28.

// MARKET MOVING CATALYSTS FOR THE WEEK

October 19–23 · All times Eastern (EDT). Earnings from Netflix, Tesla and IBM, Tuesday’s housing data and Friday’s consumer sentiment lead the week. NYSE and CME calendars show no holiday interruption. This is a selection of events; dates may change.

Keep the dates straight: The next FOMC meeting is October 27–28, outside this issue’s trading week. Intel reports October 29, according to its own announcement, despite October 22 estimates on some calendars.

// SEASONALITY WATCH

A constructive backdrop, with conditions

For October 19–23, the S&P 500’s seasonal backdrop is more encouraging than its reputation for October turbulence suggests. Carson Investment Research identifies October as historically the strongest month in midterm-election years. That is a full-month tendency for the cash index, not a futures-return study or an established edge for these five sessions.

Bullish tendency: This is the week after October’s monthly options expiration. Stock Trader’s Almanac’s historical commentary, published in September 2025, describes that window as more favorable when an October pullback has already occurred. A recovery accompanied by broader participation would strengthen the practical case.

Bearish tendency: The same Almanac discussion warns that the post-expiration week remains vulnerable to declines without that preceding reset. Midterm seasonality can also fail: Carson identifies October 2018 as a clear counterexample. Treat the calendar as context; price and breadth must confirm.

// BREADTH

Daily and weekly readings are separate measures. Percentages exclude unchanged issues and volume; combined totals are weighted. Weekly highs and lows follow WSJ’s definitions, rather than sums of daily counts or counts of unique companies.

Daily Breadth · October 16, 2026

  • NYSE Breadth: 44% Upside Volume

  • Nasdaq Breadth: 31% Upside Volume

  • Total Breadth: 36% Upside Volume

  • NYSE Advance/Decline: 42% Advance

  • Nasdaq Advance/Decline: 26% Advance

  • Total Advance/Decline: 32% Advance

  • NYSE New Highs/New Lows: 63 / 102

  • Nasdaq New Highs/New Lows: 77 / 453

  • NYSE TRIN: 0.94 (reported)

  • Nasdaq TRIN: 0.79 (reported)

Weekly Breadth · Week ended October 16, 2026

  • NYSE Breadth: 49% Upside Volume

  • Nasdaq Breadth: 44% Upside Volume

  • Total Breadth: 46% Upside Volume

  • NYSE Advance/Decline: 50% Advance

  • Nasdaq Advance/Decline: 31% Advance

  • Total Advance/Decline: 38% Advance

  • NYSE New Highs/New Lows: 143 / 481

  • Nasdaq New Highs/New Lows: 233 / 1,078

  • NYSE TRIN: 1.04 (calculated)

  • Nasdaq TRIN: 0.58 (calculated)

What participation says: Nasdaq weakened across the week: its advance share fell from 43% in the October 9 weekly totals to 31%, and upside volume from 52% to 44%. NYSE advance share improved from 48% to 50%, but upside volume slipped from 55% to 49%. This is uneven participation with sharper Nasdaq deterioration, consistent with NQ underperforming ES.

October 19–23: A stronger recovery would pair price stabilization with improving Nasdaq advance share and upside volume, plus fewer new lows. A price bounce while Nasdaq participation remains near these weak readings would offer less confirmation.

// TECHNICALS

October 12–16: December ES fell 163.00 points (2.07%) from the prior Friday’s last-trade close; December NQ lost 1,732.00 (5.56%). ES finished in the bottom 13% of its weekly range and NQ in the bottom 6%. Both broke the previous week’s lows, with NQ leading the deterioration. Weekly figures cover all traded hours from Sunday, October 11 at 6 p.m. through Friday, October 16 at 5 p.m. Eastern; closes are session-end last trades, not official settlements.

  • ESZ6 full-week O/H/L/C: 7,873.00 / 7,887.00 / 7,676.00 / 7,703.00. The 211.00-point range expanded from 137.25 points during October 5–9.

  • NQZ6 full-week O/H/L/C: 31,145.50 / 31,289.25 / 29,268.75 / 29,391.25. Its 2,020.50-point range was about 2.45 times the prior week’s 824.50 points.

What carries forward: ES’s broken October 5–9 low at 7,760.25 is the first weekly reference to reclaim; last week’s high at 7,887.00 sits below the prior 7,897.50 high. NQ’s broken prior-week low at 30,792.00 is a more distant recovery test; its latest weekly high was 31,289.25, below the prior 31,616.50 peak.

October 19–23: Holding 7,676.00 ES and 29,268.75 NQ, followed by daily closing acceptance back above the broken prior-week lows, would improve the repair case. Sustained trade below the latest lows would extend the breakdown. These are observed weekly extremes, not forecast targets; a rebound alone would not establish a trend reversal.

// THIS WEEK’S TACTICAL FOCUS

October 19–23 · December ES (ESZ6) and NQ (NQZ6). Start defensive after last week’s breakdown. Friday’s last-trade closes were 7,703.00 ES and 29,391.25 NQ, not settlements. The October 12–16 lows, 7,676.00 and 29,268.75, are the hold-or-fail references. Acceptance on daily Globex last-trade closes above the broken October 5–9 lows, 7,760.25 ES and 30,792.00 NQ, would improve the recovery case. Favor price confirmation over the constructive but imprecise seasonal backdrop.

  • Monday, October 19: Let the opening rotation develop. Holding last week’s lows supports a rebound attempt; sustained trade below them favors continuation lower. A failed break that quickly reclaims the lows negates the breakdown setup. Avoid chasing the first move.

  • Tuesday, October 20: Watch the response to GM’s 6:30 a.m. ET results, then 8:30 a.m. housing starts/permits. Favor repair if ES reclaims 7,760.25 and holds through the Globex close; rejection keeps sellers in control. Whipsaw around the level means wait. Netflix reports after the close.

  • Wednesday, October 21: Test whether Netflix’s reaction broadens into Nasdaq participation. Improving advance share and upside volume support the bounce; weak participation argues against chasing it. A recovery that loses last week’s lows fails the test. Reassess exposure before Tesla and IBM results.

  • Thursday, October 22: Let 8:30 a.m. ET claims and the prior evening’s earnings reaction settle. Holding recovered levels favors follow-through; losing them with fresh lows favors renewed downside. Conflicting ES/NQ reactions invalidate a clean directional setup.

  • Friday, October 23: Watch 10:00 a.m. ET consumer sentiment, then the closing response. Reclaimed weekly references with stronger participation support repair; failed reclaim attempts preserve the defensive bias. A headline spike that reverses is no confirmation. Avoid forcing a late-week trade.

Execution: Size to volatility, reassess after releases, and stay flat when price and breadth disagree. The week’s tell: Can ES’s Globex last trade finish back above 7,760.25 while Nasdaq participation improves?
